When the gods and demons churned the ocean, 14 gems came out of it. There was a conflict between the gods and the demons over the nectar. Asurraj run away with the golden urn of nectar, in this scuffle, a few drops of nectar fell down and wherever they fall, due to the rays of sun, those drops dried up and turn into different type of gems.

The Gem is considered to be 89 major gems and the rest are considered as upratnas.
